Who Was Franz Feuchtl?

Franz Feuchtl was born in Vienna in 1914. His artistic journey began at an age when most people would consider a new creative career unlikely: at seventy-eight.

What followed was an extraordinary period of artistic productivity. During the thirteen years that remained to him, Franz Feuchtl created 700 gouache paintings, developing a highly individual body of work marked by expressive colour, emotional intensity and a powerful personal vision.

Painting became a profound form of expression for him. Working primarily with gouache and other painting techniques, he explored colour, form and movement with remarkable freedom. His works reveal an artist who did not seek to imitate established fashions, but instead followed his own inner impulse.

His first exhibition took place in Vienna in 1994 at Galerie Volksoper and was met with considerable interest. His works were subsequently presented in connection with international art events, including art fairs in Cologne and Basel, and were published in art-related media.

Yet the most remarkable aspect of Franz Feuchtl’s story is perhaps not the number of works he created, but the age at which he began.

His life reminds us that artistic creativity has no fixed timetable. There is no age at which the imagination must fall silent. On the contrary, a lifetime of experience can become a profound source of artistic expression.

Franz Feuchtl continued painting until his death in 2007.

Today, 700 gouache paintings form the heart of the Feuchtl Collection. Preserved in Haus Feuchtl, his former home and studio, they remain a testament to an extraordinary late artistic awakening.

His story is ultimately a story about the freedom to begin — even when others might believe it is too late.
